Development Officer – Recruitment and Training

Shared Lives Plus is the UK membership charity for more than 6,000 Shared Lives carers, 150 Shared Lives schemes and a growing network of over 25 local Homeshare organisations. Our vision is a kinder, stronger society built on sharing our lives and our homes. We help build communities where everyone lives a full life, regardless of the support they need. We do this by turning Shared Lives and Homeshare into thriving, mainstream options, with all the right structures in place to support and guide who want to share their lives and homes.

In Shared Lives, the person moves into the carer’s own home either for short breaks or long-term as a place to settle and feel they belong. Key to the success of all arrangements is the careful recruitment and matching processes, carried out by the local scheme, which involves all parties in a personalised decision-making process.

Shared Lives Plus secured £300k from the government Community Coronavirus Support Fund, distributed by the National Lottery Community Fund, which helped develop new ways to recruit, assess and train Shared Lives carers that is sustainable through a pandemic or lockdown situation but will also bring additional benefits of online working and accessibility to schemes and members.

We are now looking for someone to maximise the potential of the portal by ensuring as many schemes as possible sign up to the arrangement, co-ordinate the roll out of the online recruitment and training platforms to the wider Shared Lives membership.

Job Objectives

  • Communicating with schemes on this exciting development, raising awareness about the key benefits of the portal/training and signing up an agreed number of schemes per year
  • Leading the rollout of the online platform including providing initial training sessions and supporting schemes and carer applicants with any enquiries.

Main duties and responsibilities

Main duties and responsibilities

  1. Promote the use of the online recruitment and training platform
  • Work with the wider Shared Lives Plus team to attract new users for the online platforms against agreed targets
  • Attend regional meetings/scheme meetings to promote the portal and its effectiveness
  • Develop and distribute case studies and best practice examples to promote the benefits of the online platform
  • Implement systems for collating the work and outcomes of the portal including continued liaison with the pilot schemes
  • Analyse the monitoring and management data of the portal to look at improvements for future developments
  • Work with the Communications Team to write and programme content for website and social media platforms to generate applications


  1. Co-ordinate training
  • Deliver face-to-face/virtual training for schemes on accessing and utilising the portal.
  • Manage and develop content on the portal using learn dash and wordpress for example to set up individual schemes to use the portal
  • Co-ordinate the participation of online training with schemes and members ensuring it is an effective and positive experience for all
  • Evaluate training delivery to ensure a consistent and quality experience for participants
  • Work with the Communication and Strategic advice team to test, learn from and adapt training activities
  • Capture and analyse quantitative and qualitative data, including feedback from schemes and training participants to feed into monitoring reports and evaluation,
  • Assist in the planning and delivery of Shared Lives annual conference.

3.    Data Protection Officer

  • Provide guidance and support around data protection at all levels within the organisation, maintaining and updating data protection policies and guidance, privacy statements and data sharing agreements as issues arise.
  • Support others in the organisation for managing privacy by design
  • Respond to data requests from third party organisations and will investigate any potential or actual data breaches, serving as the key contact with the ICO.

4.    To offer support to our members across the UK

  • Support our members to share systems, process and learning to ensure consistency across the sector
  • Develop a community of practice to share best practice, quality and positive case studies across the sector and membership in terms of using the portal
  • To be the first point of contact for scheme and applicants queries regarding portal enquiries .
  • To deal with ongoing enquiries of website for applicants (approx. 5 per week) to provide additional information and where required pass to local schemes.
  • Administration of data sharing agreements
  • Co-ordinating any required changes to privacy statements and relevant policies
  • Support the Communications Manager in ensuring the safety of the information contained on the portal

5.    Contribute to the effective administration of Shared Lives Plus

  • Report on the outcomes of the post
  • Contribute to the planning of future training and events, including liaising with the Communication and Strategic Advice Teams
  • Contribute to budgeting and financial planning, managing identified budgets, with the support of the Finance Director.

6.      General

  • Work in accordance with Shared Lives Plus’s aims, objectives, policies and procedures and promote a positive image of the organisation and its members.
  • Undertake such other duties as may reasonably be required, commensurate with the level of the post. As Shared Lives Plus is a small organisation, all staff carry out ‘hands-on’ work at all levels, on occasion.
