Gracie, who is supported through Rotherham Shared Lives, has been named a winner of the Young People Award. The award recognises young people with lived experience of social care who are improving outcomes for others.

Katie, another ambassador, was also shortlisted for the same award, and the Shared Lives for Young People Leaving Care programme was shortlisted for the Innovation Award.

Using experience to support others

As an ambassador for the Shared Lives for Young People Leaving Care programme, Gracie has used her experience of the social care system, and her experience as someone who is part of Shared Lives, to raise awareness of what young people need to move into adulthood with confidence, speaking at national events, in Parliament and through media and film.

Gracie said:

“Winning this award is about advocating for young voices that can feel lost. I want to be a role model and show that even the darkest parts of life can have a brighter side.

In my 20s, I feel like I’m becoming the person I needed when I was younger. Through Shared Lives, I’ve been able to heal and learn from the people who have supported me. Life really can get better when you have the right people around you.”

She also reflected on her own journey, and the difference that support can make:

“At 18, I felt scared and unsure of my place in the world. Because of these connections, I no longer dwell on the past and look forward to the future.”

Through Shared Lives, Gracie was matched with a Shared Lives carer in her local area, helping her feel settled and able to move forward with confidence.

She now volunteers locally, speaks at national events, and continues to use her voice to support others.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, Cllr Baker-Rogers, said:

“Being part of Shared Lives is being part of something really special. We are incredibly proud that Gracie has won this national award and continues to highlight the positive impact that Shared Lives has as well as advocating for other individuals. It’s always lovely to learn about how far people have come with the support of Shared Lives as it creates a sense of belonging, builds positive lasting relationships, and helps individuals to find their independence. Shared Lives is one of many ways in which Rotherham Council is helping people to live well across the borough.”

Moving into adulthood can be a time of uncertainty. The right support can make all the difference. The Shared Lives for Young People Leaving Care programme supports young people from age 16 and beyond, helping them build relationships, confidence and independence at their own pace. It is designed for young people who need support as they move into adulthood, including those with a learning disability, autism or mental health needs.

Since launching in 2024, it has supported more than 125 young people to build stable, meaningful lives.
