Lincolnshire carer shortlisted for community care award

Georgina Kennedy, a Shared Lives carer from Lincolnshire, has been nominated for the Community Care Award at the Lincolnshire Care Awards. The awards have been recognising the best in care in the county since 2016, focusing on the hard work and commitment of front-line workers in social care.

Georgina and her partner, Andrew, opened their home to Jordan, a young man dealing with alcohol and gambling addictions, for a short break. What was meant to be a six-week stay turned into a much longer commitment as they quickly developed a bond and saw that Jordan would benefit from long-term support.

Georgina made the life-changing decision to leave her 23-year career as a social worker to become a full-time Shared Lives carer.Carla Pearce, Communications and Engagement Manager at PSS, who manage the Shared Lives Lincolnshire scheme, said:

“Jordan’s transformation has been extraordinary. Before coming to Shared Lives, he was isolated from his family and had little social contact. With Georgina and Andrew’s support, he’s reconnected with his family, joined two day services, even moving onto a more advanced one having outgrown the original programme.

They’ve helped him find new skills, supported him through difficult times when his mum became ill, and encouraged him to join two sports teams that include both disabled and non-disabled members. Jordan now enjoys social outings like going to the pub without falling back into alcohol use.”

The awards ceremony will take place at the DoubleTree by Hilton on 27th March. While Georgina has been nominated, her partner Andrew has been just as involved in caring for Jordan. However, the award rules only allow single nominations.

Carla said:

“What makes Georgina and Andrew stand out is their selflessness. Georgina left her career because she knew she could give a better life to someone who needed her.”
