‘Empowering’ Shared Lives Carer Wins Gold at Wales Care Awards

A Shared Lives carer from Colwyn Bay in North Wales has been recognised by Care Forum Wales with the highest award, for her dedication to the people she supports. Karen Jackson received the Gold Award for Community Care, recognising her expertise as a care professional.

'She doesn’t think she does anything special’

A Shared Lives carer since 2007, Karen initially offered respite breaks before opening her home for supported people to live with her full time in 2015. For more than fifteen years, Karen’s care has made a profound difference to the lives of the people she supports.

Lucie Williams, Service Manager at PSS Cymru, nominated Karen for the award. “Karen doesn’t think she does anything special, but the impact she’s had is incredible. She’s given these individuals a quality of life that many take for granted,” Lucie said. “They’re happier and more confident, all thanks to her care.”

A supportive home for Darren and Chantelle

Karen currently supports two adults with complex needs, Darren* and Chantelle*. Darren arrived at Karen’s home nine years ago, struggling with mental health and trauma. With Karen’s support, he has rebuilt his self-esteem, enjoys hobbies, and set personal goals, like walking 10,000 steps every four days. He even gained his first passport and explored his love of railways with train trips.

A year ago, Chantelle also joined Karen’s household. who faced severe challenges, including a lack of basic life skills. With Karen’s support, Chantelle learned to care for herself, built a social life, and even took her first holiday.

Darren and Chantelle now share a sibling-like bond, thanks to Karen’s care. “Karen is family to them,” Lucie said. “They trust her more than anyone, and that trust has helped them achieve things they never thought possible.”

Promoting empowerment and independence

Lucie praised Karen’s wealth of experience, including her background in therapeutic counselling, which has enhanced the emotional support she provides. “She applies her expertise with compassion, always creating a sense of empowerment in the people she supports,” Lucie said.

Karen’s approach goes beyond daily care: she actively promotes independence and growth. She ensures Darren and Chantelle are connected to their families and participate in community activities. “Karen always thinks about how to give them more opportunities to grow and have fun,” Lucie said.

A passionate advocate

Karen is passionate about raising awareness for Shared Lives and its impact. “She said to me, ‘Can you get me on the radio? I feel so strongly about what we do, and it’s not talked about enough,’” Lucie said. “Karen wants to advocate for the service, and we plan to use her voice to help raise awareness.”

“Karen’s dedication shows how care can truly change lives,” Lucie said. “She is the perfect example of what Shared Lives stands for, and fully deserves the Wales Care Award for Community Care.”
