September is Sepsis Awareness Month.
Sepsis is an extreme immune response to an infection, and it kills more people in the UK each year than breast cancer, prostate cancer and bowel combined.
If an adult is feeling really unwell, and may have an infection of some sort, it’s important to keep an eye out for the following symptoms:
Sepsis is so dangerous because its symptoms can be mistaken for flu or a bad cold and can vary from person to person. This makes it difficult to spot, which is why the Sepsis Trust recommends asking ‘could it be sepsis?’ and calling 999 or visiting A&E when the answer to that question is yes.
People who have problems communicating are at a greater risk from sepsis because they may not be able to tell someone else that something feels wrong. That’s why it’s so important for Shared Lives carers and scheme workers to learn to spot the signs of sepsis – and why Shared Lives Plus and the Sepsis Trust are joining forces to deliver #SepisSavvy training to our members.
If you aren’t a member, and want to know more about sepsis, visit the Sepsis Trust website. On there you can find helpful resources like this Sepsis Savvy guide.
And you can test your knowledge with this fun Sepsis Savvy Game.
If you are a member of Shared Lives Plus, keep an eye on your email inbox over the next few days for your invitation to this important training session.
