Practical support

As a member of Shared Lives Plus, our partners can support you with:

Tax returns and advice

Shared Lives carers are self-employed – this is because they provide support from their own home, in their own way, rather than being directed like employees. HMRC recognises this through Qualifying Care Relief (QCR), a special tax scheme designed to make sure Shared Lives carers aren’t hit with large or unexpected tax bills.

As a member, our partners offer guidance or tax advice about how to register as self-employed, qualifying care relief, and how to do an online tax return through.

Free national insurance and benefits support

Our partners advise on:

  • Income tax responsibilities and allowances
  • National Insurance and securing your full state pension
  • Benefits including Universal Credit, PIP, DLA, ESA, Carer’s Allowance, housing and council tax relief

General legal advice

Shared Lives members can access our general legal helpline through Markel Law.

House and contents insurance

Our partners Everywhen (formerly Towergate) understand that the person you support is not a tenant. Their policies treat them as part of the household and include accidental and malicious damage cover – which is crucial if your supported person damages something in your home.

Mortgages

Most mortgage lenders don’t understand Shared Lives. It doesn’t fit the usual boxes – not renting, not fostering, and not a traditional business. Our specialist partners understand Shared Lives – and that makes all the difference.
