This Shared Lives Week we are talking to people up and down the country to hear their inspirational stories of change and how Shared Lives has helped them to move on and become more independent than before.
Shared Lives ambassador Paul was living in a Shared Lives arrangement for many years with his carer. In recent months however, he has been planning for living a more independent life and, around six weeks ago, he was able to move in his own flat for the first time.
“It’s much bigger than the old place,” said Paul. “I used to be able to touch the ceiling with my hand! Living on my own is great – I can do what I want when I want and can still access support when I need to. The time was right for me to live more independently.”
As an avid Tottenham Hotspur fan and season ticket holder, Paul is also pleased his new place is just five minutes away from the ground!
“I had some help from my mum and sister to move in and am really happy with everything. There is some work needed on the bathroom and I’m just waiting for an assessment on that. But most importantly I can get to the Spurs game in just five minutes on the mobility scooter. And on a good day I can see the ground from my balcony!”
As for Spurs’ chance this season, Paul is hoping his team can push for Champions League places again, after finishing fourth in last year’s campaign. Best of luck to Spurs and to you in your new home Paul!
