This is a chance to meet the Shared Lives carer champions and other carers from across the UK. Why not join us from the comfort of your own home and meet our friendly team and chat with other Shared Lives carers.

Everybody is welcome and we hope this session will be full of friendly faces with the chance to discuss current issues and get support and advice.

1B Human rights for Shared Lives carers and the people they support (suitable for Shared Lives carers)

Hosted by – Eilidh Turnbull, British Institute of Human Rights.

During this workshop, the British Institute of Human Rights will share knowledge of how human rights apply every day here in the UK

The workshop will support you with information about your rights and the rights of people you care about when accessing or working with public services. The workshop will use real life stories and examples. It will be interactive and once delegates have booked on there will be a chance to put forward your questions for discussion on the day.

1C Supported Loving – sex and relationships (suitable for everyone)

Hosted by – Dr Claire Bates – Supported Loving Leader – Choice Support.

During this workshop, Dr Claire Bates will lead us through this very important subject, and we will learn about

  • Importance of relationships
  • Main barriers and facilitators
  • Useful links and resources

There will also be brief discussion about what the law says (and doesn’t say) on the topic.

1D Spotlight on innovation (suitable for everyone)

Hosted by – Lee Hardman and Angela Beaumont, Shared Lives Barnsley, South East Wales Shared Lives Scheme and Lesley Stevenson Shared Lives Plus.

This session will profile the work of schemes that were successful at the 2019 Shared Lives Plus Scheme Innovation award:

  • Shared Lives Barnsley, highly commended for developing Shared Lives for people at risk of becoming homeless
  • South East Wales Shared Lives Scheme, which won for pioneering Wales’ first regional health initiative and has also launched its first mental health crisis project

The session will give an overview of the projects, their outcomes, and lessons learned; as well as the challenges and success factors associated with innovation.

1E Recruiting Shared Lives carers – sharing experiences from the expansion project (not suitable for Shared Lives carers)

Hosted by – Kate Morgan Camphill Village Trust, Alison Rogers and Gary Ferguson Walsall, Claire Morphet PossAbilities, Emma Pugh Birmingham, Phoebe Barber-Rowell Shared Lives Plus.

This workshop will hear from four Shared Lives schemes and Shared Lives Plus who took part in the emergency Covid-19 funded expansion project October 2020-March 2021, who together with two other schemes (Avalon and South West Shared Lives) recruited 200 new Shared Lives carers in under six months and by the end of the project had made 100 new matches.

It will cover:

  • What’s needed to make this impact
  • How schemes adapted – their staffing, resources, assessment process, and recruitment drives
  • Successes you could adapt for your area
  • Challenges – what didn’t work well, and how we overcame barriers
  • What this could mean for your scheme and Shared Lives across the UK

1F My Shared Life – The outcome tool for Shared Lives (not suitable for Shared Lives carers)

During this workshop, Cathy will give information about the background and development of the outcome tool My Shared Life. You will be taken on a tour of the tool and Cathy will explain how it works, point out its special features and explain what it could do for you and your Shared Lives scheme. Cathy will also present the national data collected.

1G Supporting survivors of domestic abuse (suitable for everyone)

Hosted by – Ali Miller Shared Lives Plus.

Following a three-year domestic abuse development project, Shared Lives Plus delivered part of the government’s emergency Covid-19 safe accommodation response for victims of domestic abuse (2020-2021).

This workshop looks at why survivors with care and support needs are unable to access mainstream domestic abuse safe accommodation, how Shared Lives can provide safe accommodation, and the support survivors need to maintain safety and recover from trauma.

Delegates will learn from stories of survivors who were supported through the pandemic and build an understanding of how Shared Lives schemes and carers can provide trauma-informed environments that lay the foundation for survivor’s recovery.

Learn about creating a brand with impact and how to use it to raise awareness of your organisation, aligned with Shared Lives Plus UK branding.

Learn to make simple, eye-catching, effective leaflets and posters, social media posts and online content.

Discover how to use layout, colour, and words to attract new people, carers, householders, and sharers to your Shared Lives or Homeshare service.

Have the opportunity to get expert input on your marketing collateral.

1I Finance basics (suitable for everyone)

This workshop will help Shared Lives carers & scheme workers and Homeshare network members understand the basics of finance. Dealing with subjects such as petty cash, purchase invoices, sales invoices, bank statements, basic cashflow reports & VAT.

1J Regional Shared Lives development (not suitable for Shared Lives carers)

Hosted by – Mark Gallagher and Nick Gordon Shared Lives Plus, with Heather Thomson, ambassador, Shared Lives Plus.

In February 2021, the North East branch of Adass began working in partnership with Shared Lives Plus to implement a regional approach to the development, diversification, and expansion of Shared Lives across the region. This workshop will discuss the project, approaches used and learning which can influence other regional or multi-partner approaches to Shared Lives growth and development.

This workshop is also available as an option for workshop 2.
