Celebrating Trish: Shared Lives Carer of the Year at Islington’s Dignity in Care Award

Shared Lives carer Trish has been named Shared Lives Carer of the Year at Islington’s Dignity in Care Awards after supporting CB, a 31-year-old woman with Down Syndrome and a learning disability, to gain independence and confidence.

CB was raised by her Nan and attended a special school. Her education was limited, and her understanding far exceeded her ability to express herself. Her home situation was far from ideal. When CB began overnight stays with Trish in November 2021, she was very quiet. “I was very shy and anxious when I first stayed with Trish. I didn’t talk much. I would just say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to everything,” CB recalls.

From the start, Trish encouraged CB to believe in herself. “Trish kept saying ‘You are an adult now and can make your own choices.’ She made me believe that I could do lots of things and that I would one day get my own home,” CB says. With Trish’s support, CB gradually gained confidence, learning to care for herself, travel independently, and manage her medication and GP appointments.

CB also explored new skills and interests. “Trish arranged singing lessons and that helped me to gain confidence. With Trish’s support I have done some good painting at Art Box,” she explains. She also began taking pride in her appearance and enjoying her personal style: “Trish encouraged me to make my own decisions, like choosing nice clothes and jewelery and clips for my hair when we go shopping. I am proud of my appearance, and I love my new hair colour.”

Trish helped CB take the big step of moving into her own flat. “We talked a lot about me getting my own place and she told me about somebody that she knows who moved on and was very happy. I used to say, ‘not yet.’ Then one day I agreed. That was the biggest decision I ever made. I wasn’t sure but Trish encouraged me,” CB says. She describes the excitement of the moment: “The most exciting part was getting the keys and opening the door to my flat. Trish brought champagne and we had a celebration.”

Over the following weeks, Trish supported CB in furnishing and setting up her flat, helping her make decisions and gain independence. “Trish put everything in her car including a huge TV and set it up. I was ready to sleep at my flat for the first time.”

Reflecting on Trish’s care and why she nominated her for Shared Lives Carer of the Year, CB says: I want to say thank you to Trish because I know this would not have happened without her. She is the best carer and I love her. She is very kind, and she is a great cook. I stayed with her overnight and one day every week for nearly 4 years.”

The Dignity in Care Awards celebrate the dedication and impact of carers across Islington, including Shared Lives carers, personal assistants, and unpaid carers with winners announced at Islington Assembly Hall on Monday, 22 September.
