September is World Alzheimer’s Month with September 21st being World Alzheimer’s day – a global campaign to raise awareness of dementia and challenge the stigma that still surrounds it.
At Shared Lives Plus, we believe that community-based, relationship-focused support is part of the solution – helping people live well for longer and supporting carers in their vital role.
Through our national programme, Live More, we are working with partners across Greater Manchester, and other sites across the UK to explore how Shared Lives day support can offer a meaningful alternative for people living with dementia.
The programme focuses on keeping people connected to the activities, places and relationships that matter most, while reducing isolation and preventing crisis. By shifting the focus from treatment to prevention, we aim to help people thrive – not just cope.
Too often, families receive little or no help after a dementia diagnosis until they reach breaking point. Shared Lives day support and short breaks provide a vital bridge, offering opportunities to stay active, social and independent before formal care becomes essential.
Research shows that Shared Lives helps people living with dementia maintain friendships, a sense of control, and a presence in their communities. It also gives family carers the time and space to recharge, strengthening their ability to continue caring with confidence.
As part of World Alzheimer’s Month, we’re sharing stories that show how Shared Lives carers, schemes and families are already making a difference across the UK. These stories highlight the small but powerful ways Shared Lives can transform lives.
