Professional Care Workers’ Week 2025 (12th – 19th September) celebrates the dedication, skill and compassion of carers across the UK. In Shared Lives, that dedication takes a unique form: carers open their homes and their lives, creating relationships built on trust, belonging and support.
To mark the week, we’re sharing stories from Islington Shared Lives. These short films show how carers and the people they support build genuine, lasting relationships that improve wellbeing, create stronger communities, and highlight the distinctive difference Shared Lives makes every day.
When Taymar became a Shared Lives carer in 2008, she was already supporting Alan, whose health was poor and who had little social interaction. Fifteen years later, Alan is part of her family. They share outings, conversations, and mutual support. “It’s really transformed his life,” says Taymar. Alan puts it simply: “I’ll give her a hundred out of fifty.”
Keisha, a mum of two young sons, provides day support through Shared Lives. Adrian and Patricia quickly became part of their household, enjoying bowling trips, cinema outings, and pamper sessions. For Keisha, the experience is deeply rewarding: “It doesn’t feel like a job. I’m doing something I love, and being paid for it is a bonus.”
Dolores has supported John since he was a child, welcoming him into her family alongside her son Michael. Over three decades later, their bond remains unbreakable. “You’ve got to want to share your life with that person,” says Dolores, while John sums it up best: “I feel so happy and proud.”
When Bernie first met Jessie, she knew instantly she was the right carer for her son Anthony. Jessie now provides overnight respite care, giving Bernie peace of mind and Anthony a trusted friend. “Shared Lives gave me a new lease of life,” Jessie explains. Anthony agrees: “She’s kind. I love her.” Their connection is a source of joy for them both.
These stories show the difference Shared Lives carers make every day. By opening their homes and building trusted relationships, they offer support that goes beyond routine care – giving people greater independence, stability, and a sense of belonging.
