Dedicated care in action: Spotlight on Peter during Professional Care Workers’ Week 2025

Professional Care Workers’ Week 2025 (12th – 19th September) celebrates the dedication and compassion of carers across the UK. At Shared Lives Plus, we see how Shared Lives carers make a difference every day – not just by providing essential support, but by offering a home, family life, and a sense of community.

One carer who exemplifies this commitment is Peter, a long-standing Shared Lives carer with Westmorland and Furness Shared Lives. Peter supports people through long-term, respite, and day placements, taking the time to understand their hobbies, interests, and local activities. His “toolbelt” of activities ensures that everyone feels engaged, valued and connected.

Pip Fox, Temporary Manager for Westmorland and Furness Shared Lives, said: “A standout feature of Peter’s approach is his daily summaries, prepared voluntarily in his own time. These updates give families a clear view of their loved one’s day, providing reassurance and fostering connection- especially important for families supporting someone with dementia. Feedback from families consistently highlights how much they appreciate these thoughtful updates.”

Peter’s commitment extends beyond his home. He actively engages with local community groups, advocates for Shared Lives, and offers peer support to fellow carers, helping others deliver high-quality, person-centred care. He is also supported by Sky, his Springer Spaniel therapy dog, who brings calm, comfort, and companionship to those he supports.

Reflecting on his work, Peter says: “Although, now at a stage in life when others may want to slow down, I do not see the point, when I feel I have so much more to offer. Yes, the pace is slower, but I can still enjoy myself. I feel that I can offer someone an opportunity to share what we all enjoy doing. My previous day respite client had dementia, and we joined the local Dignity in Dementia group, where we enjoyed table tennis, ceramics, walks, woodland wellness, poetry readings, talks, and a monthly supper club.”
