Shared Lives featured in ‘I just want to be able to dance’ TLAP report – supporting people living with dementia

Today, Think Local Act Personal (TLAP) have launched ‘I just want to be able to dance’, a report co-authored by Neil Crowther and Liz Leach Murphy highlighting fresh and innovative approaches to support people living with dementia to thrive through connections built in community based and person-centred care.

As part of the report launch today, TLAP are hosting a webinar to share the experiences of people living with dementia, and examples of care and support such as Shared Lives, that help people to live well.

The publishing of this report and mention of Shared Lives as a promising practice in supporting people living with dementia to stay connected and active, is welcomed by Shared Lives Plus, having recently launched ‘Live more’ a national programme to grow Shared Lives for people living with dementia and their families. Kicking off in September ‘Live more’ will test, learn and evaluate Shared Lives day support to help more people living with dementia to stay active and connected to the people, places and things that matter most to them.

It is well documented that many people and their families experience an absence of support following a dementia diagnosis and often access social care at crisis point. The ‘I just want to be able to dance report’ identifies personalised care options which can be accessed after diagnosis, decreasing the likelihood of a future crisis, and supporting people to remain living independently in their local communities. Shared Lives Plus are inviting local areas to contribute to ‘Live more’ to explore Shared Lives day support as an option for people living with dementia and to make the recommendations in this report a reality.
