A home filled with care: Jasmin’s Shared Lives story.

This Shared Lives Week, we’re sharing stories from the people who make up our community. Today, meet Jasmin a 27 year old Shared Lives carer who lives with the two people that she supports in her Surrey home.

Growing up in a family of nursing-home owners, Jasmin’s path into care felt almost inevitable. As she puts it:

“I’ve always worked within the health care sector – it’s something that has been a part of my life from a very young age. My parents were nursing-home owners, so I grew up in an environment where caring for others was at the heart of our everyday life.”

That early experience, she explains, “deeply influenced my passion for this line of work.” And the sense of purpose “runs in the family,” with her sister Sarra also becoming a Shared Lives carer.

From daycare to Shared Lives

Before opening her own home to the people she supports, Jasmin gained hands-on experience elsewhere:

“I worked in a daycare centre for a few years, and then moved onto a small care home.”

Jasmin initially provided Shared Lives day support on a part time basis. But once her house was fully refurbished, she became a full-time Shared Lives carer. Today she shares her home with the two people she supports, (A – who is in his 30’s, and H – who is in her 60’s), and the family cat.

“I currently support two wonderful individuals… I’ve known both of them for many years, and over that time we’ve built a strong and meaningful bond… They are both a very special part of my life and feel like extended family to me.”

A day in the Shared Life

Jasmin describes her daily routine with warmth and practical detail:

“A typical day as a Shared Lives carer begins with supporting A and H with their personal care and helping them get ready to start their day. Often, I’ll pop out to do some food shopping, collect medication, and ensure we have everything we need at home. We usually spend time together preparing and cooking dinner – I like to get them involved in the kitchen, as it’s a great opportunity to build skills and share moments together. The afternoon is usually a time to relax and unwind, unless we’ve made other plans. Whether we’re out and about, visiting friends and family, or simply having a good chat at home.”

Why she loves the role

Asked what keeps her motivated, Jasmin is clear:

“Making A and H feel safe and supported and loved. Supporting them to make their dreams come true.”

“It’s a very rewarding job. I absolutely love what I do, it is fulfilling and the people I support are my world…. I feel privileged to support them in a way that helps them live comfortably, confidently, and happily within our shared home.”

Jasmin supports A and H through Surrey Choices Shared Lives Scheme.
