Rob Beckley, the High Sheriff of Somerset, recently visited the Shared Lives South West team, along with the Shared Lives carers and individuals they support, at their base in Ilminster.
During his visit, the High Sheriff joined the group for lunch and spoke with several supported individuals and their carers. He heard inspiring stories, including that of Mollie, who is completing a degree and now works full-time.
Mollie, supported by Shared Lives carers Mae and Pat Pleydell-Pearce, said:
“Meeting the High Sheriff was great. He asked about my life before and how it has changed. Sharing my progress – completing university, driving, working full-time and all the trips and experiences with my Shared Lives family – was of great importance to me. It showed how vital a supportive environment can be for a person.”
The visit demonstrated the impact of Shared Lives South West and gave the group a chance to learn about the High Sheriff’s ceremonial role. The attendees were particularly interested in his ceremonial attire, including his sword and medals.
Amanda Maggs, Somerset Team Leader at Shared Lives South West, said:
“We’re extremely grateful the High Sheriff visited and took the time to learn about the great work we do. He showed a genuine interest in everyone who attended.”
