Awards 2022: Linda and Jeff Manley win Lifetime Achievement Award for their work in Shared Lives

Linda and Jeff Manley are the winners of this years Shared Lives carer Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is for people who have dedicated their lives to sharing them with others and serving their community. This can certainly be said for Linda and Jeff who have been with their local scheme for 42 years.

“Everybody coming to Shared Lives used to say, ‘I want to come to Linda and Jeff’” says Ruth Cobb, who used to work with the couple at the Bradford scheme and nominated the pair for this award.

Their most recent long-term arrangement lasted for 22 years, where they cared for Tim. Sadly, Tim recently passed away.

“Toward the end of Tim’s life they continued to make every day matter to him and provide him with the best of care right to the end.”

Many people in the local area feel close to Linda, Jeff, and the rest of their family, which was evident at Tim’s funeral due to the large turnout.

“They and their children and grandchildren gave Tim the best send off and celebrated his death as he was celebrated in life.”

Tim’s favourite music was played throughout the ceremony, including Cheeky Girls and Pump up the volume, ensuring a party atmosphere throughout. It also took place on Tim’s birthday, so they celebrated with a cake.

True to her selfless nature, Linda was keen to shine the light away from herself and Jeff, and pay homage to her family instead.

“Our family were absolutely fantastic with everybody we looked after as well, I can’t just say Jeff and I, because our family have been involved with everything we’ve done with him” she said.

“Our grandson came back home on Christmas eve, away from his mates, just so he could be with Tim.”

As well as being great Shared Lives carers they are a source of knowledge and support for everyone in the local community. They can always be relied upon to get involved in activities for those with learning disabilities. They continue to support the scheme with short term breaks but are planning to leave the area.

As expected, their legacy to the community will be one of empathy and thoughtfulness. They are discussing with their landlord to leave their house modified so it’s suitable for the use of individuals with mobility needs.
