Thousands of vulnerable adults offered homes with local families as part of innovative social care scheme

As the care crisis continues to hit social services, a unique scheme that sees ordinary people open up their own homes and family lives to support vulnerable adults and young people has grown rapidly. The Shared Lives approach, which helps people with complex needs, has seen demand for its services grow by 14% in the last year.

When Blake Milne, from Moreton, was 12 years old he never imagined he would find a happy and secure home with a family, until he met Beverley. Through Shared Lives, Beverley and Blake have been able to stay together after he became too old to foster. He had already been to a number of different foster carers and felt unsettled, until he met Beverley.

Shared Lives Plus is backing the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to work together with the Adult Social care sector to produce a new regime to tackle failing care through special measures from April 2015.
