Shared Lives Plus board vacancies

Shared Lives Plus is the UK network for shared living approaches to care and support for disabled or older people. We are a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. Our members include Shared Lives carers and coordinators and Homeshare schemes.

There are nearly 9,000 Shared Lives carers in the UK, recruited, trained and approved by over 150 local schemes, which are regulated by the government’s social care inspectors. In Shared Lives, an adult (and sometimes a 16/17 year old) who needs support and/or accommodation moves in with or regularly visits an approved Shared Lives carer, after they have been matched for compatibility. Together, they share family and community life.

We believe the UK can only effectively tackle big problems like social isolation and falling social care budgets, through harnessing the resources and skills of ordinary families and communities. Our members show how we could make new use of family homes instead of expensive institutions. They all work on a small or family-sized scale and they show how personal relationships can be more effective than professional/client transactions

Shared Lives Plus helps our circa 5000 Shared Lives carer members and over 150 schemes to work[ together to survive and thrive, influencing local and national policy makers and providing support, training, events, resources, research programmes and access to insurance. We work alongside our sister organisation, Community Catalysts, a social enterprise set up by Shared Lives Plus in 2010.

Our board oversees the charity’s work, setting the strategic direction, supporting the CEO and senior managers, ensuring resources are well-used and occasionally acting as ambassadors. We are seeking two trustees who have experience of senior leadership, a deep understanding of the challenges facing our sector and who can help us build our networks and connections. The board meets quarterly in Liverpool, one session including an overnight stay, and Trustees are expected to make at least two of the four meetings.

Our board of trustees includes four trustees nominated by our national committees, two Shared Lives carers and an equalities champion. Our Chair is Richard Jones who is a co-opted member. We are currently looking to recruit two co-opted board members one of which will be the chair of Equality and Diversity.

Skills currently underrepresented on the board include legal experience; experience of communications, media, marketing and PR; and links to the corporate world and potential donors. We are also keen to increase the diversity of our board and would welcome applications from people from black and minority ethnic communities.
