Shared Lives Plus is the UK membership charity for more than 6,000 Shared Lives carers, 150 Shared Lives schemes and a growing network of over 25 local Homeshare organisations. We do this by turning Shared Lives and Homeshare into thriving, mainstream options, with all the right structures in place to support and guide those who want to share their lives and homes.

Membership Support and Engagement Manager

This is an exciting new role to manage our support to carers and schemes across the UK. Shared Lives Plus helps our members to come together to develop the sector to survive and thrive, influencing local and national policy makers and providing support, training, events, resources, reserach programmes and access to insurance. High quality advice and information is given Shared Lives members on a range of issues through our website guidance and online forums, conference and webinars as well as specialist legal and benefits advice.

Job Objectives

  1. Lead and manage our support and engagement for Shared Lives Plus members
  2. Plan, co-ordinate and help deliver the Shared Lives Plus events calendar including webinars, regional meetings and annual conference
  3. Promote both carer membership, and scheme membership offer to ensure offers are relevant and continuously improving
  4. Promote, develop and monitor take up of Shared Lives Commitment to Quality
  5. Keep up to date with relevant legislation or system changes which impact on Shared Lives carers and respond accordingly
  6. Work with the Shared Lives carer support officer and the Scheme support officer to identify and try to resolve issues of concern
  7. Develop guidance, campaigns and other responses to issues of concern to the Shared Lives network
  8. Work with the Homeshare UK Team to provide membership support to the Homeshare UK network members

Main duties and responsibilities

1. To lead and manage support and engagement for Shared Lives Plus members

  1. Provide supervision and support to the Shared Lives Plus membership support team including carer facing and scheme facing teams
  2. Ensure the organisational escalation plan is followed when dealing with concerns arising from the network
  3. Work with the Head of Membership to ensure membership offers remain relevant, responsive and valuable
  4. Work with the Head of Membership to co-ordinate external elements of member support including legal and benefit advice
  5. Actively promote membership to Shared Lives Schemes and Shared Lives carers
  6. Ensure the Shared Lives carer support team delivers on the relevant areas of the organisational operational plan in a timely manner.
  7. Develop, support and oversee the Shared Lives carer support workplan
  8. Support production of the annual Shared Lives Plus Sector report by helping develop questionnaires for the collection of information from key stakeholders, help collate information and support writing report content that captures, growth, good practice and key recommendations for the sector.

2. To plan, co-ordinate and help deliver the Shared Lives Plus events and meetings programme

  1. Organise conferences, webinars, meetings and forums that meet the needs of our membership and enhance the organisations image building relationships between Shared Lives Plus and its members
  2. Project manage the national Shared Lives Plus conference implementing and co-ordinating event plans and concepts whilst working within a budget
  3. Co-ordinate the use of IT that supports large event planning
  4. Develop, facilitate and support a national network of Shared Lives carers and Shared Lives Schemes to support each other and contribute to the Shared Lives movement
  5. Work with the wider team to develop the Shared Lives Plus governance structure through our new Your Voice forums
  6. Ensure the team deliver the administration support to the network meetings and forums

3. To promote both carer membership offers, and scheme membership offer and to ensure offers are relevant and continuously improving

  1. Ensure member benefits remain relevant and responsive to the full range of Shared Lives members and to address any issues in a timely manner
  2. Ensure that Shared Lives carers members can contribute effectively to Shared Lives Plus strategic planning
  3. Support members to develop new local partnerships to enhance the shared lives offer

4. Promote, develop and monitor take up of Shared Lives Commitment to Quality

  1. Support the Shared Lives carer support officer and the scheme support officer to work with members to promote, develop and monitor take up of Shared Lives Commitment to Quality
  2. Organise and support delivery of Charter workshops for enhanced scheme members
  3. Work with the Strategic Advice team to ensure that the Shared Lives Charter, Ambassador Test and Quality Framework are embedded as cornerstones of our partnership work

5. To identify issues of concern to Shared Lives Plus members and develop strategies to address those issues

  1. Identify key issues and feed those into the strategic planning process
  2. Work with colleagues to develop and coordinate campaigns based on Shared Lives member issues
  3. Work closely with the Shared Lives Scheme support officer and Shared Lives carer Support Officer to identify strategies to resolve issues and work jointly to problem solve in an area where necessary, including offering mediation between scheme staff and Shared Lives carers
  4. Establish working groups to define the Shared Lives Plus view of Good Practice and agree strategies to address identified issues

6. To keep up to date with relevant legislation or system changes which impact on Shared Lives carers and respond accordingly.

  1. Keep informed on legislation or system changes that impacts on Shared Lives carers
  2. Work with the Shared Lives Plus policy officer to develop position statements and feed into the policy and influencing strategic work
  3. Work with Government departments as necessary to minimise negative impacts of any system or legislative changes on Shared Lives carers
  4. Work with the communications team to convey any changes and possible impacts to Shared Lives carers and scheme workers

7. Develop guidance, campaigns and other responses to issues of concern to members

  1. Develop, commission, write and edit guidance for members and other audiences, and support colleagues to produce high quality written work within identified timescales
  2. Collate and identify key themes arising from interactions from schemes and carers to ensure the organisation is providing satisfactory responses
  3. Ensure that Shared Lives carer members can contribute to Shared Lives Plus working parties set up to address issues concerning them
  4. Work with Shared Lives carer members to find ways to promote and enable their involvement in Shared Lives Plus at all levels, including regional committee meetings and national conferences

8. Work with the Homeshare UK Team to provide membership support to the Homeshare UK network members.

  1. Work in partnership with the HSUK Team to actively support the delivery of an annual National Conference for Homeshare UK network members
  2. Ensure membership team can be effective first point of contact calls and enquiries for Homeshare UK and sufficient processes are in place to pass over the enquiries to relevant team

9. Working Practice

Person specification:

  • Educated to degree level or experience which demonstrates equivalent ability.
  • Line management experience
  • Experience of developing and working with quality assurance and related programmes
  • Experience developing campaigns or influencing programmes
  • Experience in making presentations to a variety of audiences
  • Designing resources and learning materials; drafting guides; writing articles.
  • Budget planning and project management.
  • Experience of event planning including using virtual platforms
  • An understanding of Shared Lives and the philosophy underpinning our work and the sector
  • An understanding of the work of Shared Lives carers, Shared Lives scheme managers, commissioners and the challenges they face.
  • Knowledge and understanding of government policies relevant to delivering, commissioning and using our members’ range of services.
  • Knowledge of the regulator systems and frameworks in the four nations of the UK and how they relate to Shared Lives.
  • Excellent presentation, communication and report writing skills.
  • Able to engage confidently and constructively with Shared Lives carers and people living in, working in, and commissioning Shared Lives schemes.
  • Effective organisation and time management skills.
  • Able to lead and motivate a staff team with a variety of remits to work towards a common mission
  • Managing potential conflicts between the interests of different kinds of individual and organisational member, and other key stakeholders including commissioners; mediation skills
  • Able to work flexibly and creatively using own initiative.
  • Competent and confident use of IT
